The Secured United® MileagePlus® Neo World Elite® Mastercard is a rare secured travel rewards card for Canadians who want access to premium airline benefits while building or rebuilding their credit profile. It offers many of the same core advantages as the regular United® MileagePlus® Neo World Elite® Mastercard, including MileagePlus earning, welcome miles, annual renewal miles, free first checked bag, priority boarding, NEXUS fee credit, Star Alliance redemption access, travel insurance, and Mastercard World Elite benefits.
Its biggest strength is that it combines secured credit access with real travel value. Most secured cards focus only on basic credit building, but this card gives eligible users a way to earn United MileagePlus miles and use premium travel perks while managing a secured credit limit. For Canadians who fly United, travel to the U.S., use Star Alliance airlines, or want to build credit without giving up travel rewards, this card can be a strong fit.
However, it is still not the right card for everyone. The $89 annual fee, 3% foreign transaction fee, higher potential APR range, no balance transfer option, and security funds requirement make it best for users who plan to pay their balance in full and can actually use the travel benefits. RateBuddy sees this as a strong secured option for credit builders, newcomers, cross-border travellers, United loyalists, and Star Alliance users, but less ideal for users who want a no-fee secured card, simple cash back, or low-cost borrowing.
The Good
- Secured access to premium travel rewards Unlike many basic secured cards, this card gives cardholders access to MileagePlus miles, airline perks, travel insurance, and World Elite benefits while using a secured credit structure.
- Good for building or rebuilding credit Because this is the secured version, it can be useful for Canadians who are new to credit, rebuilding credit, or may not qualify for the regular unsecured version.
- Same core United and Star Alliance value Cardholders can earn 1.25 miles per $1 on United and Star Alliance flight purchases, making it attractive for travellers who regularly book with those airlines.
- Welcome and renewal mileage value Cardholders can earn up to 25,000 MileagePlus miles through the welcome offer and annual renewal bonus, giving the card meaningful first-year and ongoing value.
- Free first checked bag The free checked bag benefit can help offset the $89 annual fee quickly for United travellers who check bags.
- Priority boarding benefit Group 2 priority boarding on United flights adds practical convenience for the primary cardholder and travel companions.
- NEXUS fee credit The card includes up to $120 USD NEXUS fee credit every 5 years, which is a valuable benefit for cross-border travellers.
- Earn miles on everyday spending The card earns 1 mile per $1 on dining and groceries and 0.75 miles per $1 everywhere else, allowing cardholders to build MileagePlus miles from daily purchases.
- Extra earning through Neo partners Cardholders can earn additional MileagePlus miles at 10,000+ Neo partners across Canada, which can increase value for users who already shop within Neo’s partner network.
- Travel insurance and World Elite benefits Travel insurance, Mastercard World Elite benefits, and premium travel perks make this more complete than many typical secured credit cards.
The Trade-offs
- Security funds are required Because this is a secured card, users may need to provide refundable security funds that act as their credit limit. That makes it less flexible than a traditional unsecured credit card.
- Annual fee still applies The $89 annual fee may be worth it for travellers who use the benefits, but it is a drawback for users looking for a low-cost secured card.
- Best value depends on United or Star Alliance travel Users who do not fly United or Star Alliance may not get enough value from the card’s main travel benefits.
- 3% foreign transaction fee The 3% FX fee is a drawback for a travel-focused card, especially for users who plan to spend outside Canada.
- Lower base earn rate on general purchases The 0.75 miles per $1 earn rate on everyday non-category purchases is not as strong as some flat-rate rewards or cash back cards.
- High potential interest rate The purchase APR can go as high as 29.99% outside Quebec, so this card is best for users who pay their balance in full every month.
- No balance transfer option This card does not appear suitable for users looking to transfer existing credit card debt to a lower promotional rate.
- Income requirements may still apply The listed requirements of $80,000 personal income or $150,000 household income may limit accessibility for some applicants, even though this is the secured version.
- MileagePlus is less flexible than cash back MileagePlus miles can be valuable for travel, but they are not as simple or flexible as cash rewards.
